This is very insightful. I’ve just started experimenting with ChatGPT and its RPG uses. So far, I’ve found it very helpful for creating outlines, generating prompts, and fleshing out 1st drafts.
Using it for player handouts sounds like a really good idea. I had no idea about Elder, either. An ai dedicated to a single RPG could be very handy in running that game.
It varies between the GMs in our group, but we are using chatGPT mostly to do things like generate NPCs and some of their personality attributes and motivations. It works well when you want to develop a population of NPCs for a town for instance and have unique motivations and personalities that can surprise the GM. And I think that’s one area we find it useful as a form of GM play, to get things that we don’t expect while still being a bit of a background task

Great article! My group has been using ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for game prep for our home game and find them to be really powerful
Thanks Dan! What kinds of prep are you using it for?
